Shop Tour

Ardenwood Forge is my blacksmith shop located at Ardenwood Historic Farm in Fremont CA. The building the shop is in was built in the late 1890’s and is connected to what is now the equipment shed. The shop was originally used for maintaining the equipment and shoeing the work animals on the farm. There are no records available to describe what the original layout of the shop looked like, but was most likely a basic farm blacksmith shop such as you would see on any large farm in the U.S. at that time.

When I first moved into the shop in 1999 there were only the brick hearth forge and  blower, a 145 lb anvil and a post vice. Today, the shop looks a bit different. There are three forging stations, a number of workbenches, swage blocks, anvils, post vices, and a large variety hammers, tongs, punches and chisels; most of them forged right here in the shop. I also installed a potbelly stove the keep the shop warm on the few really cold days here in the SF bay area. The shop operates in a historical manner from late 1800’s to the 1920’s and provides interpretative program to the park visitors. I also create custom ironwork for sale to the public. Because of the historic nature of the shop, 95% of my work is hammered, punched, cut, riveted, forge welded, chiseled, and ground by hand.
